“DEMO TEACHING”

One of the requirements in English 80 is the demo teaching. At first, when it was announced, all of us reacted. I can’t imagine myself to do the demo teaching, with my classmates as the students. Of course, I felt the pressure because I had to be good in teaching those kinder or elementary-acting students. I also spent some time thinking and worrying of what would be my topic. But what bothered me most is the way I would be acting in front of my students. But I was slightly relaxed when I saw the first student to do the demo teaching. All of us were very excited to see how she would do it because we really don’t have any idea on what to do. As many of classmates had done the activity, my nervousness turned to a little excitement. I can’t wait for my turn to demo teach. Until the most awaited day came.
September 29, 2011. Finally, it was my turn. I was so excited but quite nervous. That time many of us were aiming to do the demo teaching that afternoon, so I did my best to be the first and thank’s God I was the first to do the demo teaching that afternoon. I got all my materials posted and came to the classroom ready to be an elementary teacher.
I felt all the pressure that time because I know I’m not a funny person. I thought my classmates would cooperate, but I was mistaken. I was happy and satisfied with their response. They really acted well as grade 3 pupils. They followed what I had told them to do. When I told them to read, they did. They participated in the activities I had prepared and I was satisfied with the result. I can say that all my preparations and effort to act as an elementary teacher were not in vain. As I taught, I could see that they were listening and were always on the go to the board.
And with regards to the lesson plan I made, Prof. Subiere made some corrections and suggestions. Well, of course I did not expect it to be perfect but I was quite happy because I was able to be a teacher, especially an elementary teacher. As a future teacher, I learned and proved that patience is the only weapon of a teacher. Even when that activity was just scripted, there were instances that I went impatient because of their noise.
I learned that as a teacher, I should be flexible (which is my weakness), be innovative, be authoritative, be strategic, and be prepared. It made me realized that teaching is the hardest task to do. It’s because as a teacher, you must be a model, facilitator, manager, leader, and even an entertainer. But the most important realization I’ve had in this activity was that I’m on the right and noble path. It made me so sure that teaching would be my profession. In this activity, I think I was able to accomplish a great thing.
